Search tips for Katalog+

Search areas

In the Katalog+ you can choose between two search areas or combine them:

Library Catalog

Here you will find printed and online media from all library units of the RPTU University Library: e. g. books, e-books, university publications, magazines, e-journals, CDs, DVDs, psychological tests, maps and games.

Articles and more

With the help of an index, you can search various databases for scientific articles in e-journals and contributions in e-books as well as conference proceedings, which are available in full text at the RPTU.

Combined Search (Library Catalog + Articles and more)

This search combines the search areas "Library Catalog" and "Articles and more".

Search tips

  • Search terms are not case-sensitive.
  • Umlauts may have to be resolved.
    ä, ö, ü -> ae, oe, ue
  • Use search terms in German and in English, as much of the literature is written and evaluated in English. Searching for words in both languages increases the number of results.
    umwelt OR environment
  • When using the wildcard * (truncation) at the end of a search word, search results are displayed which begin with this sequence of letters but have other characters (word stem search).
    pollut* finds pollute, pollutants, pollution…
  • The advanced search offers the possibility to conduct complex search queries in the Katalog+ by linking multiple search fields. Different search filters can be set before the search to reduce the number of results.

Boolean Operators

  • Multiple search terms can be connected using AND, OR, and NOT. These functions must be written in uppercase letters to avoid being treated as search text. If nothing else is specified, your search terms will automatically be linked with AND.
  • AND: The AND operator matches records where both terms exist anywhere in the field of a record.
To search for records that contain "economics" and "Keynes" use the query:
economics Keynes or economics AND Keynes
  • +: The "+" or required operator requires that the term after the "+" symbol exist somewhere in the field of a record.
To search for records that must contain "economics" and may contain "Keynes" use the query:
    +economics Keynes
  • OR: The OR operator links two terms and finds a matching record if either of the terms exist in a record.
To search for documents that contain either "economics Keynes" or just "Keynes" use the query:
    "economics Keynes" OR Keynes
  • NOT: The NOT operator excludes records that contain the term after NOT.
To search for documents that contain "economics" but not "Keynes" use the query:
    economics NOT Keynes
Note: The NOT operator cannot be used with just one term. For example, the following search will return no results:
    NOT economics
  • -: The - or prohibit operator excludes documents that contain the term after the "-" symbol.
To search for documents that contain "economics" but not "Keynes" use the query:
    economics -Keynes

Phrase search

  • If you want to search for a specific phrase, enclose it in quotation marks.
    „climate change“

Wildcard Search

  • To perform a multiple character, 0 or more, wildcard search use the * symbol. When using the wildcard * (truncation) at the end of a search term, search results, which start with the chosen term as a word stem followed by different suffixes, will be displayed (word stem search).
    educat* finds educate, education, educational...
  • To perform a single character wildcard search use the question mark (?).
For example, to search for "woman" or "women" you can use the search:
    wom?n

Fuzzy Searches

  • Use the tilde ~ symbol at the end of a single word term. For example, to search for variant spellings of "Tchaikovsky," use the fuzzy search:
    Tchaikovsky~
  • An additional parameter can specify the required similarity. The value lies between 0 and 1, with a value closer to 1 only terms with a higher similarity will be matched. For example:
    Tchaikovsky~0.8
The default that is used if the parameter is not given is 0.5.

Proximity Search

  • Use the tilde ~ symbol at the end of a multiple word term. For example, to search for economics and keynes that are not more than 10 words apart:
    "economics Keynes"~10

Range Search

  • To perform a range search you can use the { } characters. For example to search for a term that starts with either A, B, or C:
    {A TO C}
  • The same can be done with numeric fields such as the Year:
    {2002 TO 2003}

Boosting a Term

  • To apply more value to a term, you can use the circumflex (^) character. For example, you can try the following search:
    economics Keynes^5
Which will give more value to the term "Keynes".

Refine Results

  • Optimize your search results in the result list in the section “Refine Results”. The result list is automatically sorted by relevance. You can sort your results by further criteria. The various filter options (facets) can also be combined.

Save and Export Query and Results

  • The search can be subscribed to as an RSS feed through the relevant links below the results list, sent via email, or saved to your account. You can also save individual results directly to your book bag with one click in the results list.
  • In the detailed view of a result, you can also transfer a title to yoursmartphone via QR code, cite it, send it as an email, print it, export it as an EndNote, BibTex, or RIS file, or retrieve a persistent link to this result.
